Interoperability Project Management

This is a tracking discussion for updates on the development of the interop project.

Contributing

The interop specs serve as the source of truth for what is being built. The specs should be written before any implementations are merged and should be used to drive code review. Longer form discussions exist for async communications about the project.

There are 3 standups per week: Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Notes are kept here. The Monday standup is required and all teams should provide a status update to share with the rest of the team about their work stream.

The design-docs repository should be used to build consensus on designs. Please follow the guidelines in the design docs repo's README.

It is up to the discretion of the engineers to decide what should be turned into a design doc vs a spec. Some features should be a design doc first and then turned into a spec while others only need one of the two.

Meetings

A new comment should be created each week that includes status updates from each owner of a project. Further discussion about that week should be done in sub comments.

Interop Go updates:

op-supervisor

Adrian implemented a draft of the supervisor DB, with support for initiating messages:

Proto reviewed, and Adrian started on executing messages support.

Proto will re-review latest changes today or Monday.

Deriver refactor

Making solid progress on refactor of
op-node driver/derivation components to become event-based, incrementally.
Tracking issue: #10865

3 stacked in-flight PRs.
Some of these may need minor updates for tests still, reviewing that today.
The last PR is draft, almost done, finalization code testing update is in progress.

After that a bit more polishing remains, to cut out the last shared state in the op-node driver,
and go towards fully event-based processing.
The main question is whether or not we include the sequencing also.
This is a bit of extra scope, but makes the engine separation a lot better,
by not having shared synchronous engine-controller state anywhere anymore.
Given the devnet timeline change, Proto will implement this early next week.

And then next week we can lift the events processing into parallel processing (by running each deriver in a separate go routine).

Deposits tx

Proto proposed, largely based on inputs from others during cowork day,
there is a two-step way to get to a usable form of interop usage through deposit txs.
The first step is sufficient for devnet 1, and prepares us for the next.

Mofi has started onboarding as part-time contributor and may implement
this deposit derivation and CrossL2Inbox change.

Devnet 1 timing

The above issues all have to be closed out first,
and more work remains to complete the op-supervisor MVP and integration
of the safety-checking into op-node. This will be started next week,
but is going to continue after collective-pause. This puts the devnet target at mid July.

Superc20 updates:

SuperchainERC20 Standard

Currently, we are working on expanding this in order to send a formal Design Doc/PR very soon.

Liquidity Migration

We have published three new design documents to enable migration, making existing tokens interoperable:

We have made small updates to the Mirror Factory Design Doc and have been discussing the Liquidity Migration and Mirror docs (see above). This week, we will discuss our designs (on Tuesday), and then we will move on to the specs.

SuperchainERC20 Standard

At Wonderland we have made our first PR on top of PR 71 and are now simplifying the current proposed interface design, as suggested by @tynes ​​and @smartcontracts. We are also adding more details and addressing other comments. ethereum-optimism/specs#257

This Friday, we will present SuperchainERC20 to the reviewers. ethereum-optimism/design-docs#42

Liquidity Migration

Following the call referenced in ethereum-optimism/design-docs#38, we have decided not to proceed with the Mirror standard. Instead, we will move into the Convert solution, initially specified here ethereum-optimism/design-docs#35. We will work on presenting a detailed Design Doc for the Convert solution.

Liquidity Migration

As we talked last Wednesday, we are currently working on the Convert solution and crafting a Design Doc around this approach.

Superchain WETH

SuperchainWETH is built on top of the SuperchainERC20 spec, since the standard hasn't been finalized yet, its a draft PR. Design goal to make it as simple as possible, no auto unwrapping to prevent footguns.

This week we are wrapping up the events refactor, getting MVP op-supervisor, and working on integrating the two.
Main target: get op-supervisor with op-node running in op-e2e, to prepare us for devnet.
Devnet will likely take at least till end next week.

We have come up with an initial version of SuperchainERC20 standard and Factory contracts. It's private for now and subject to any change. We're about to do unit tests and settle some decisions to go forward into first deployments and further tests.

Liquidity Migration

We're working on specs for convert approach and the needed registry. Also we're starting discussion on ideas of potential designs to solve migration for existing L2 native tokens and custom bridged tokens.

SuperchainERC20 Factory specs

We've presented the design doc for the Factory. Note that design details how it would work for L1 native tokens in line with our work on liquidity migration. However, most of the design described can be ported to factories for L2 native tokens.

• With additional FP work, integration challenges, and deposit-tx delays, we will not be ready for Devnet 1 next week.

• Tic Tac Toe reference implementation is working with Supersim but will benefit from the abstractions work.

This is being prioritized due to blockers on op-e2e.

op-e2e testing

Currently blocked by minimal DeployConfig modularization work on the forge deploy scripts side.

After that, for proper integration with unblocked path for full coverage into op-e2e,
we need to improve how op-e2e configures and creates deployments.

We still have an open design doc for cache-based integration of the deploy scripts into op-e2e: ethereum-optimism/design-docs#52

This may however be replaced with a newer alternative idea of running the Forge scripts in Go, to avoid caching complexity. Tracked here: #11360
We should reschedule the design-doc review of the first proposal, so we can take this new proposed solution into account.

op-supervisor

Axel was OOO this morning. Next work continues on #11311

After indexing the executing messages correctly we can proceed
with dependency resolution and
API responses.

Communication

Proto created slides for a quick technical overview of the message passing part of Interop.
This is now being extended to full interop scope by the team.
With some more work this might turn into a good interop-tech introduction doc.

Extra Detail From Axel:

• First focusing on updating and merging Adrain's old "include executing message data" PR to use the Hashes.

• Next focused on using the Head Database when responding to API queries

• Two more tickets exist beyond that which I'm not ready to commit to just yet

• Also digging deeper on the way Nodes:Supervisor must track potentially invalid blocks w/ Adrian, using the reasoning doc I made last week. We've got a little more clarity that we've got a reorg-compatible solution, and I think some new observations about interop:FP requirements.

Interop test setup / deploy Flow

Design-docs by @protolambda and @mds1 are scheduled for a review meeting tomorrow.

The proposed Go test-setup depends on functionality of op-geth that has changed a lot in March.
These updates still need to be pulled into op-geth.
There is a draft of the op-geth updates
by the Base team, which Proto will help review.

The draft of a local devnet is still open,
and while ready for some review, some of the configuration steps are incomplete.
This is blocked until we have some of the configuration improvements that are part of OPStackManager milestone 1.
We can maybe hack around it if needed, but the focus is on doing things the right way: write maintainable tests.

[Supersim MVP]

• Nearing completion of Supersim Stage 1, Supersim that simulates interop. Focus on asset transfer and smoothing out developer experience.

• Looking to put together a small group of beta testers for Supersim as we get closer to our MVP release.

[Supersim Extensibility]

• Supersim extensibility is next focus: make it easy for 3rd parties/specialists to build on top of Supersim so that devs can test their entire app locally on Supersim. Hyperlane an early adopter here with an initial PR (Hyperlane Developer Experience Demo supersim#90) for helping devs use Supersim with Hyperlane locally!

[Reference Implementations]

• Tic Tac Toe game finishing up but due to issues with some of the UX around approving transactions multiple times it probably isn't the most compelling example of interop awesomeness.
• Need a "Hello World" that's compelling to go with launch, ideating over what that could be and how it fits into Supersim GTM.

1. DragonflyDB: High-performance, low-latency.
